It's been a while since I tried to learn a new 3D program, (Carrara was the last), but Cinema 4d seemed very intimidating at first. As I began to explore the software (mine came with 90 days of Cineversity - http://www.cineversity.com, Maxon's training site) I realized how advanced the software really is. My first examples have utilized Poser Fusion, which allows hosting of Poser Pro scenes in Cinema 4d. That works really well (even better than the Lightwave version IMOHO). The only issue I saw was when I had AO turned on but didn't render transparency. This tends to make the eyes turn completely black. Checking Evaluate Transparency in the AO settings seems to completely remedy this.
I found a great tutorial that helped me on my way (in addition to the Cineversity site). The tut is at http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/2009/03/16/intro-to-cinema-4d-tutorial/
It does a great job of showing, not only a simple render with an HDRI map (a custom link is included), but also covers the sometimes mystic art of post-work.
As a sidebar, I have been using Xmarks for a couple of weeks now and highly recommend it. After installing it on all of the browsers that you use (work pc, home pc, Firefox, IE, etc.), your links are automatically maintained. Very cool for keeping your favorites up to date no matter where you are.
To close, here is my first example of Cinema 4D handiwork. The first image is the original, the second, after the aforementioned tutorial. WARNING, this scene was created for practice only. No critiques necessary. Enjoy.

Nice composition. I would like to see an HD version of this image if possible. Maybe put a tray with a glass of milk and some cookies in the robots hand as if he's serving the young lady. That's all.
